Wikimedia Belgium is the Belgian chapter of the Wikimedia movement, founded in 2014. It supports Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects - Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wiktionary - across the country’s Dutch, French and German-speaking communities.

# Why they matter to us

Wikipedia runs on MediaWiki, free software, and depends on volunteers and openly licensed content. Wikimedia Belgium’s GLAM partnerships push Belgian galleries, libraries, archives, and museums to release their collections under free licenses, and the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest turns heritage photography into a shared public resource. That work keeps a large slice of Belgium’s cultural memory in the commons rather than behind a paywall or a platform’s terms of service.
